CER update regarding fatality at Trans Mountain worksite

October 30, 2020

Safety specialists and enforcement personnel from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) remain on the Trans Mountain worksite near Edmonton, Alberta, where a worker died on October 27, 2020. This event is a tragic reminder of why safety is our priority.

All work associated with the equipment involved in the incident has been voluntarily halted by Trans Mountain. CER personnel are gathering facts to determine whether further compliance and enforcement actions are required. Any compliance and enforcement actions by the CER will be made public.

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is leading the investigation into the fatality given its role in provincial occupational health and safety matters. The CER shares responsibility for overseeing safety measures for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project and we continue to engage with provincial authorities.

The CER continues to keep the Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee of the Trans Mountain expansion and existing pipeline informed.

Further updates will be provided as available.
