Final Investigation Report on the 2022 NGTL Simonette Lateral Pipeline Rupture

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released its final investigation report on the 2022 NGTL Simonette Lateral pipeline rupture. The TSB investigation found the cause of the pipeline rupture was external pipe corrosion.

When the incident occurred, the CER activated its Emergency Operations Centre and immediately deployed Inspection Officers to the site to oversee the company’s response to ensure people, property and the environment were protected.

Companies are required to follow the rules outlined in the CER’s Onshore Pipeline Regulations (OPR) and associated safety standards such as CSA Z662, Oil and gas pipeline systems. The OPR and CSA Z662 require companies to ensure their pipelines are properly protected from corrosion and have an emergency procedure in place to isolate and shut down a pipeline if it ruptures.

The CER will share learnings from the Simonette Lateral pipeline rupture with its regulated companies to help prevent a similar incident.

We will continue to support companies to improve their safety cultures and to ensure they know the rules they need to follow to keep pipelines safe.
