CER on-site response to Trans Mountain’s Sumas Pump Station incident has concluded
June 19, 2020
The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has now concluded its on-site response and a joint inspection with Indigenous Monitors from the Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (IAMC-TMX), following the above ground crude oil release at the Sumas Pump Station in Abbotsford, BC. The Sumas Pump Station is part of existing facilities of the Trans Mountain line.
The Unified Command established by Trans Mountain and the CER to manage the emergency phase of this incident has been stood down. CER’s strict regulatory oversight will continue as clean-up activities and remediation of the affected area is completed in accordance with the CER’s Remediation Process Guide. The need for further compliance verification activities as Trans Mountain meets these regulatory requirements will continue to be assessed.
The CER expects its regulated companies to have zero spills or incidents. If an incident occurs, the CER is ready to respond and holds companies accountable to ensure all required actions are taken to protect people and the environment.
The incident was reported to the CER on June 13, 2020. Trans Mountain’s revised estimate of total volume released is approximately 150 – 190 cubic meters.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is investigating this incident.
