Purpose: Provide an update on the Arctic Offshore Drilling Review to the Minister of Economic Development and Transportation, Government of Nunavut (EDT, GN)

NEB provided introductory remarks, which included a general overview of the scope and phases of the Arctic Offshore Drilling Review, the gathering and analysis of information, and the production of a report.

Follow the introductory comments, the Minister and his staff raised number of areas of interest and concern, including:

  • the importance of engaging the Baffin region communities and providing accurate information about the offshore drilling activity off the west coast of Greenland, as any spill that occurred there would affect many Baffin communities
  • there is an important public education component that needs to take place in regard to oil and gas exploration and development
  • oil and gas development is new to people in many regions of Nunavut, and there must be a balance in the information that various organizations are providing to the communities with respect to oil and gas development
  • two groups in Nunavut that the NEB would benefit from engaging are the Sustainable Development Advisory Group and the Socio-economic Monitoring Committee
  • the grounding of ships in the Northwest Passage in the summer of 2010 revealed the lack of capacity on the part of government agencies to respond
