NGTL GP Ltd., as general partner on behalf of NGTL Limited Partnership – 2026 Abandonment Program B (Mackenzie County)
Project Background
On 4 August 2026, NGTL GP Ltd., as general partner on behalf of NGTL Limited Partnership (collectively, NGTL), filed an application to abandon five receipt meter stations and four lateral pipelines, all of which are part of the NGTL System. NGTL has determined that the facilities are not necessary to meet customers’ future natural gas transportation demands and will permanently cease operations, resulting in a discontinuance of service.
NGTL proposes to abandon approximately 129.34 km of lateral pipelines in place. For the receipt meter stations, all above-ground facilities, including meter station buildings, yard piping, unnecessary fencing and gravel, and access (where applicable), will be permanently removed. Where side valves are required for operational purposes, they will remain part of the connecting operating pipeline and will not be abandoned; however, the fencing together with the appropriate gravel pad may become smaller. Where side valves are not required for operational use, the side valves will be removed. Cathodic protection systems will be disconnected from the abandoned lateral pipelines and removed.
The facilities to be abandoned are located on provincial Crown lands administered by the Alberta Ministry of Forestry and Parks, and freehold (private) lands including NGTL-owned lands. NGTL intends to use existing land rights for the work associated with the abandonment activities. No new permanent land rights will be acquired for the 2026 Abandonment Program B. Temporary workspace may be required during physical abandonment activities.
The proposed abandonment activities are anticipated to take place during winter 2027/2028 or 2028/2029 (Q4/Q1).
