The Board administers a Participant Funding Program (PFP), which provides financial assistance to individuals, Indigenous groups, landowners, and non-industry not-for-profit groups to facilitate public participation in certain project hearings and environmental assessments of designated projects.
On 31 May 2019, the National Energy Board announced Funding Maximums of $40,000 to assist groups and $6,000 to assist individuals with their participation in the hearing for the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. – Edson Mainline Expansion Project. On 17 July 2019, the Funding Maximums announced for Edson to the same level as NGTL 2021 ($80,000 for groups and $12,000 for individuals) in response to concerns raised and a reconsideration of the factors underlying the funding assumptions (s52 project with many participants and more new Right of Way than the North Corridor project).
The PFP received 20 applications and recommended awarding $1,360,000 to the 17 eligible groups. The Executive Vice President, Regulatory approved the recommendation. Indigenous groups account for 100% of the funding awarded.
