Regulation Mandate

Appereil de forage de gaz naturel

The NEB regulates oil and gas activities on frontier lands and offshore areas not covered by provincial/federal management agreements.

Responsibilities include regulating exploration, development and production, worker and public safety and protecting the environment.

Other frontier activities include:

  • calculating discovered and undiscovered hydrocarbon resources;
  • developing emergency environmental contingency plans; and
  • fostering programs which support and complement the NEB's regulatory responsibilities.

Publications and Statistics

The Board also issues reports for areas under its jurisdiction called the Energy Information Program. These reports are part of the Board's monitoring responsibilities and provide information on the functioning of energy in regions throughout Canada.

We also regularly compile a number of statistics based on data received from regulated companies to produce publicly available information on energy imports and exports. These are updated on a regular basis and can be viewed on our website.

Publications about petroleum resource management on frontier lands include:

  • information for companies conducting frontier operations;
  • results of inquiries and investigations;
  • technical reports; and
  • catalogues of drilling, geophysical, geological and environmental program reports.

Many of the National Energy Board's publications are available on our website. Check the publications section of the site for a current list (
